Fred Thompson, who made an unsuccessful bid for the Republican presidential nomination during the 2008 election cycle, endorsed Newt Gingrich in this year's GOP primary race on Monday night.
Thompson declared his support for the former House Speaker during an appearance on Sean Hannity's Fox News program. The announcement came as Gingrich -- along with Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Ron Paul -- were participating in a debate in Florida.
"I have come to the growing realization that Newt Gingrich is the guy who can articulate what America is all about," Thompson said.
Thompson served as a U.S. senator from Tennessee from 1994 through 2003. He has also held acting roles on NBC's TV show "Law & Order" and a number of action movies.
After failing to gain traction in early primary states in 2008, Thompson abandoned his presidential campaign and later threw his support behind eventual nominee John McCain.
Gingrich added that he would like to go back to the moon "permanently" and get to Mars "as rapidly as possible, building a series of space stations and developing commercial space."
Romney and Gingrich both said that space exploration should be a collaborative effort between the federal government and the private sector.
"From NASA, from the Air Force space program, from our leading universities and from commercial enterprises -- bring them together, discuss a wide range of options for NASA and then have NASA not just funded by the federal government but by commercial enterprises," Romney added. "Have research done in our universities. Let's have a collaborative effort with business, with government, with military and with our educational institutions. Have a mission."
Gingrich was then asked whether he would "put more tax dollars into the space race and commit to putting an American on mars instead of relying on the private sector."

I would like to see vastly more of the money spent encouraging the private sector into a very aggressive experimentation. I would like a leaner NASA. I don't think building a bigger bureaucracy and having a greater number of people sit in rooms and talk gets you there. But if we had a series of goals that we were prepared to offer prizes for, there is every reason to believe you have folks in this country and around the world who would put up an amazing amount of money and would make the space coast literally hum with activity because they'd be drawn to achieve prizes."
SALT LAKE CITY -- Video from Utah during a major snowstorm shows more than a dozen cars sliding, crashing and skidding sideways down a street in just a few hours.
Rhee Braby shot the video from his Bountiful home, about 10 miles north of Salt Lake City.
He says neighbors were even perched at the top of the road Saturday, warning drivers not to attempt the hill, but many continued on and lost control. One car even crashed into a snowplow.
Between crashes, the 34-year-old says he helped push cars back onto the road only to see another come sliding down behind it.
The Utah Highway Patrol says 376 crashes of some sort were reported from Saturday through Sunday afternoon in five northern Utah counties, leading to at least 34 injuries but no fatalities
