U.S. Senator Marco Rubio's Southwest Florida regional director was arrested at a Quality Inn hotel in Fort Myers after his wife alleged he rolled her up in a carpet and kicked and punched her during a Friday night altercation at their home, according to the Lee County Sheriff's Office.
Michael J. Brennan, 39, had been placed on administrative leave but tendered his resignation Monday afternoon, the Miami-based freshman senator's spokesman Alex Conant told Politico.
34-year-old Kelly Brennan told deputies that she and her husband were arguing as they drove up to their Bonita Springs home Friday night. While a babysitter was inside with the couple's sleeping children, she said, her husband shoved her to the floor of the garage.
"Kelly states she landed on top of a rug that was lying on the garage floor...she acted as she had passed out when she landed," read the arresting officer's report. "Kelly states Michael then began to roll her up into the carpet 'as if I was dead or something'... Michael then began to kick and punch at the carpet with her still wrapped in it."
According to police, Kelly Brennan said that when she heard her husband leave the garage and head into the house, she unrolled herself from the carpet and went inside to confront him. She told investigators that in front of the babysitter, Michael Brennan accused her of lying and she asked him to leave the house.
But the babysitter left first, Kelly Brennan said, and her husband shortly pushed her into the corner of a wall, cutting her elbow and causing it to swell.
Though she later told police she had changed her mind about pressing charges, asking them to let Michael Brennan go, deputies observed that there was blood on the wall at elbow height that appeared to match Kelly Brennan's story. After it was determined through online banking records that Brennan had checked into the Quality Inn, deputies arrested him on a battery charge based on the couples' statements and visible injuries. According to online jail records, Brennan posted $1,000 bond on Saturday.

NEW YORK -- The wife of a casino mogul who contributed $5 million to an independent group supporting Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich is matching that contribution, a person with knowledge of the contribution said Monday.
Miriam Adelson, the wife of Las Vegas billionaire Sheldon Adelson, was giving $5 million to Winning Our Future, a super PAC supporting the former House speaker's presidential bid. The Adelson associate was not free to discuss the matter publicly and disclosed the contribution on condition of anonymity.
The Adelsons are close to Gingrich and have supported his political endeavors for many years. They have both made the maximum contribution to his campaign.
Super PACs can raise and spend unlimited amounts to support or oppose a candidate as long as they do not coordinate directly with a campaign. Super PACs came about after a Supreme Court ruling in 2010 significantly eased campaign finance restrictions.

Sheldon Adelson made his contribution to the pro-Gingrich super PAC in January, after Gingrich was battered with attack ads from Restore Our Future, a super PAC backing Mitt Romney. Gingrich, who had been leading polls in Iowa in December, placed fourth in the state's caucuses and fourth in the New Hampshire primary after the advertising binge.
Winning Our Future stirred controversy when it purchased and aired a documentary highly critical of Romney's years at Bain Capital, a venture capital firm where he made his wealth. The film depicted the Romney and the firm as heartless corporate raiders who destroyed countless jobs by buying and reorganizing companies. The film had many inaccuracies, and Gingrich called for it to be edited or taken down.
The associate said Miriam Adelson had asked the group to use her money on ads that support Gingrich and not on attack ads.
In response to Sheldon Adelson's concerns about the Nevada caucuses conflicting with the Jewish Sabbath, Republican Party officials said Monday they were adding a special evening caucus session on Feb. 4 for Jewish voters marking the Sabbath. The session was expected to delay the reporting of results from the nominating contest by several hours.
The Clark County Republican Party said it will hold the evening caucus to accommodate roughly 500 conservative Jewish voters observing the traditional weekly day of worship. Most Nevada Republicans would still be requested to caucus from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Feb. 4. The Sabbath ends at sundown on Saturday.
Caucus results from Clark County – it's the state's most populous county and home to Las Vegas and more than 70 percent of Nevada's total population – aren't expected to be released until after the 7 p.m. caucus at a school founded by Adelson and his wife. The majority owners of the world's largest publicly traded casino company, Las Vegas Sands Corp., the Adelsons are highly active in Jewish causes worldwide.

Zepeda told the AP that the woman, Guadalupe Bosquez, asked to use her 9-month-old daughter Camila in a two-week photo shoot for $755 ($10,000 pesos), a small fortune for a teen mother who earns $180 a month at a sandwich stand and shares a cramped, one-story house with her disabled mother, stepfather, and three brothers.
Bosquez later returned with another woman, Silvia Soto, and gave her half the money as they picked the child up. She got the rest two weeks later when they brought Camila home.
"They showed me a poster that showed my girl with other babies and said 'No To Abortion, Yes To Life,'" said Zepeda, a petite teenager cleaning her house to loud norteno music. "I thought it was legal because everything seemed very normal."
Before long, the message spread to her neighbors. Seven other women, most between the ages of 15 and 22, agreed to let their babies be part of the ad campaign. Some already had several children. Some were single mothers. Two of them didn't know how to read or write. Five of them told they AP that they did not even have birth certificates for their babies when they came across Bosquez and Soto.
One said she needed money to pay for her child's medical care. All deny agreeing to give their children up for adoption.
